Corporate investment bears fruits in Persimmon acquisition

Industrial equipment manufacturer Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI) has acquired Persimmon Technologies, a US-based vacuum robotics technology provider backed by several corporates, for a price reported by 3D Printing Industry to be ¥3.6bn ($31.8m).

Persimmon develops and manufactures vacuum robotics technology for use in the semiconductor, LED and flat panel display equipment industries, as well as electric motor systems.

The company had raised $31.7m in funding, according to press releases and securities filings.

A total of $5.8m came from a 2013 round featuring Intel Capital, the corporate venturing arm of semiconductor technology provider Intel, as well as electrical component producer Nidec Sankyo and Bernard M. Gordon Charitable Remainder Trust.

Persimmon added $14m the following year in a round that included $6m from power and automation system producer ABB’s corporate venturing subsidiary, ABB Technology Ventures, and additional funding from Berwind Private Equity.
