Sweden-headquartered buy now, pay later service Klarna has raised $800m from investors including fashion brand Bestseller and financial services firm Commonwealth Bank of Australia in a round that cut its valuation from $45.6bn to $6.7bn. The corporates were joined by Sequoia, Silver Lake, Mubadala Investment Company, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and the company’s founders.
US-based medical communication software provider Allm has closed $180m in financing from internet and e-commerce company DeNA and transport and accomodation group Seibu Holdings‘ corporate venture capital arm, Seibu Realty Solutions. The funding will be used to accelerate Allm’s digital transformation activities and healthcare technology development as it looks to cut disparities in medical treatment and patient care.
M&A
Drug producer Vertex Pharmaceuticals has agreed to buy ViaCyte, a US-based developer of stem cell treatments for diabetes, in a $320m deal which will allow advanced materials producer WL Gore and pharmaceutical firms Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer to exit. ViaCyte had collected at least $210m in equity and convertible note financing as of a series D round that stood at $115m as of June 2021.
MFine, an India-based telemedicine technology provider backed by financial services provider SBI and its SBI Ven Capital Singapore subsidiary, is merging with the diagnostics subsidiary of stem-cell bank ownerLifeCell International. The combined business will be called LifeWell and the deal is being boosted by $80m in funding from healthcare investment firm OrbiMed.
Private equity firm Clearhaven Partners has paid over $100m for a controlling stake in SundaySky, a US-based video creation software producer that counts mobile network NTT Docomo and mass media groups Comcast and Liberty Global as investors. SundaySky had raised a total of $67m as of 2016.
