News in Shorts reports $4m series A

India-based media company News in Shorts, previously backed by media company Times Internet, has secured $4m in a series A round led by hedge fund Tiger Global, TechCrunch reported earlier today.

Rebright Partners as well as angel investors Sachin and Binny Bansal, founders of e-commerce company Flipkart, joined the round.

News in Shorts previously secured R25m ($400,000) in a June 2014 seed round, backed by Times Internet, as well as angel investors Sachin and Binny Bansal. Angels Ankush Nijhawan, Gaurav Bhatnagar and Manish Dhingra led the round.

The company also received R1m in exchange for a 10% stake when it graduated Times Internet’s accelerator TLabs in 2013.

News in Shorts has developed a news digest app that summarises the top stories of the day in 60-word articles. The articles are written by editors rather than relying on an algorithm, and include a link to a larger article with more details.
