US-based curated news platform TheSkimm collected $8m yesterday in a series B round led by entertainment company 21st Century Fox.
RRE Ventures, Greycroft Partners and Homebrew have also participated in the round. The three firms previously provided $6.25m in series A capital in 2014, alongside assorted angel investors.
Homebrew also led a $1.1m seed round in 2013 that included RRE, Five Island Ventures and several private backers.
TheSkimm operates a news, events and information platform aimed at millennials. The company’s core product is a daily curated email newsletter that counts more than 3.5 million subscribers.
The company also provides a paid subscription app named Skimm Ahead and is aiming to expand into original video content under the Skimm Studios banner. TheSkimm has not disclosed details about how 21st Century Fox will assist with that push into video.
Randy Freer, president and chief operating officer of 21st Century Fox’s Fox Networks Group, said: “We were immediately impressed with TheSkimm’s unique editorial voice, and by their ability to drive meaningful engagement with their community of users.
“Carly and Danielle have mastered the art of building community and have quickly proven they can effectively expand their suite of products to serve their ever growing audience. We look forward to supporting TheSkimm’s growth, and are confident that this investment marks the beginning of a long and successful creative partnership.”
