Japan-based artificial intelligence (AI)-powered medical device developer Aillis received an amount likely to be $16.5m yesterday from investors including CEJ Capital, the corporate venturing arm of robotics technology provider Cyberdyne.
The round was also backed by asset management firm Sparx Group’s Mirai Creation Fund II, a vehicle backed by carmaker Toyota. It brought the company’s overall funding to ¥2.9bn ($27.5m) since it was founded in 2017.
Aillis is working on electronic systems equipped with AI technology to diagnose influenza at an early stage.
The funding will be used to boost the company’s research and development efforts, increase headcount and expand its presence in countries outside Japan, leveraging Cyberdyne’s experience in selling medical equipment internationally.
Pharmaceutical firm Shionogi and venture capital firm Beyond Next Ventures had taken part in an $11m round for Aillis in May 2019.
