Genacast Ventures, a partnership between the corporate venturing affiliate of telecoms company Comcast’s Interactive Capital division, and serial entrepreneur Gil Beyda, has led a $1.8m seed round for Mortar Data, a cloud-based service which makes the software Hadoop easier to use. There was also participation from early to late-stage information technology focused Atlas Ventures, Great Oaks Ventures, an early and seed-stage investment firm funded launched by Andrew Boszhardt Jr as well as individual investors.
Mortar Data emerged from stealth mode in April 2012, raising an undisclosed amount in financing led by Matt Turck, the managing director of Bloomberg Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of financial data and information provider. Mortar is still available on an invite-only basis.
