UK-based education technology developer Mel Science has collected $14m in a series B round including Channel 4 Ventures, the corporate venturing unit for UK television broadcaster Channel 4.
Other participants in the round included Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund, Mubadala Investment Company, in addition to unnamed investors from Europe and China.
Founded in 2015, Mel provides educational kits that use augmented reality and virtual reality technology to teach science subjects to children aged five to 14. The kits can be used for home teaching and to supplement teaching at schools.
The company said it will use the new funding to develop its products and to expand into new geographical markets.
TMT Investments provided $2.2m to lead a $6m round for Mel in February 2019 that also featured Sistema Venture Capital, a corporate venturing arm of diversified conglomerate Sistema, as well as internet company Yandex.
Sistema Venture Capital also supplied $2.5m in series A funding for the company in 2016, before it led a $2.2m round in 2017.
