23andMe, a personal genetics company, has raised $50m in Series D funding. Entrepreneur and venture capitalist Yuri Milner was joined by return backers Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, 23andMe Chief Executive Anne Wojcicki, venture capital firms New Enterprise Associates, Google Ventures,the corporate venturing division of search company Google, and private equity firm MPM Capital.
A start-up founded in 2006 by Linda Avey and Anne Wojcicki, the wife Sergey Brin, 23andMe raised its series A round in May 2007 from Google, biotech group Genentech, NEA and VC peer MDV-Mohr Davidow Ventures.
23andMe’s series B closed at $27.8m last year, where noted angel investor Esther Dyson was a director alongside NEA partner Patrick Chung. 23andMe raised $22m in its series C round from a consortium including new investor Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation (JJDC), the corporate venturing unit of a local healthcare company.
