GCV Rising Stars Awards 2021: Jeroen van Doornik

Jeroen van Doornik is a general partner at Rabo Frontier Ventures, the strategic investment subsidiary of Netherlands-based financial services firm Rabobank. He joined the unit as a partner in January 2018, and he was promoted to his current role in March 2020.

Formed in January 2018, Rabo Frontier Ventures backs developers of financial, food and agricultural technologies, and seeks investment opportunities in the United States, Europe and Asia. Its four areas of focus are platform banking, financial cruise control, emerging technologies and applying data to the food industry.

Rabobank provided an additional €80m ($90m) of funding for Rabo Frontier Ventures in February 2019 and the fund has roughly $170m under management. The unit has more than a dozen active portfolio companies, having most recently co-led a €12m ($14.2m) series B round for Germany-based accounting and payment processing software developer Candis in July 2020.

Van Doornik said at the time: “It is great to add Candis to our portfolio as they have been able to create a leading position in a competitive market. We have been following Candis for a longer period of time and we consider their distribution strategy combined with their product to be a very strong proposition for both SMEs and accountants.”

Before Rabobank Frontier Ventures, Van Doornik had been an investment director at VC firm StartGreen Capital for more than three years, managing its €250m venture fund providing equity, debt and project finance. He also held investing roles at growth-stage tech investment firms in energy, mobility and software and founded a motorsports startup after a stint at professional services firm Accenture.

Van Doornik holds a master of science degree in public administration with a focus on financial management from University of Leiden, is a member of the Dutch private equity and VC association and hosts guest lectures at the Universities of Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
