US-based publisher New York Times has started a media incubator.

TimeSpace will host up to five start-ups in the publisher’s New York City office.

The Times also will potentially fund the incubees after they raise money from other sources.

On the other side of the US in San Francisco, accelerator Matter Ventures has taken in its first class of six media start-ups.

Matter, which launched in December, has invested $50,000 in each start-up and is guiding them through a four-month mentorship programme.

The companies are:

StationCreator: an online broadcast television station;

SpokenLayer: a web text to narrated audio service;

Zeega: a cloud-based media service’

ChannelMeter: a video analytics platform;

OpenWatch: which provides free investigative tools to journalists; and

InkFold: a mobile news start-up.
