China-based 16Wifi, which provides wifi services for public transport, has secured more than RMB100m ($16.1m) in a series A round led by search engine provider Baidu, Tech in Asia reported earlier today.
China-based electronics manufacturer United Electronics, a seeparate company to the US-based circuit board manufacturer of the same name, also contributed funding to the round.
16Wifi has developed a dongle that is placed on public transport, capturing mobile network services and converting the 3G and 4G signals into a wifi service. The technology has been integrated into several thousand buses, as well as several underground transport systems.
The company, which currently operates in Shanghai, Beijing and Nanjing, will use the series A funding to expand into more Chinese cities.
16Wifi was set up in 2011 by computer goods manufacturer Colorful Group, telecommunications equipment maker Huawei and Beijing Mobile, a subsidiary of mobile phone network China Mobile.
