Start-ups of a feather flock together

Wefollow, a directory that enables people to discover others with common interests, has been acquired by about.me, a company that was spun out of Aol.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Wefollow, founded by Jeff Hodsdon and Kevin Rose (pictured) when they were still at social news discovery service Digg, started as a Twitter directory in 2009.

The project was later rolled into Digg. When Digg was sold to Betaworks in 2012, Hodsdon re-acquired the Wefollow project. It has since grown to a community of over 1.3 million users.

Hodsdon and Rose also co-founded mobile application company Milk, which was acquired by Google in March last year for $15m following a bidding war with social media company Facebook. Google Ventures was one of Milk’s backers, investing $200,000 in Milk in November 2011. about.me co-founder Tony Conrad also invested in Milk. Following the sale, Rose joined Google Ventures last June.

about.me has raised $5.7m from True Ventures, SoftTech VC, Google Ventures, CrunchFund and others.
