China-based central processing unit manufacturer HJ Micro has secured RMB800m ($120m) in angel and pre-series A funding from investors including chipmaker Biren Technology, 36Kr reported today. Walden International, Hillhouse Capital’s GL Ventures unit and CDH Investments’ CDH Venture and Growth Capital subsidiary co-led both rounds, investing alongside Xinlanwei, Xingrui Capital, CD Capital, Green Pine Capital Partners, Creo Capital, Zhongyiren Investment, Haihe Qirui Capital and Xiao Ventures.

Cavallo Ventures, the strategic investment arm of agribusiness Wilbur-Ellis, has co-led an $82m series C round for Vestaron, a US-based developer of peptide crop protection technology, with private investment office Ordway Selections. The round included Syngenta Ventures, a subsidiary of agribusiness Syngenta, as well as pharmaceutical firm Novo, Argonautic Ventures, Fortistar, Endeavor8, Northpond Ventures, CGC Ventures and iSelect.

Luxembourg-based steel producer ArcelorMittal intends to invest up to $100m per year through its XCarb Innovation Fund and Accelerator Programme, which is affiliated with its Innovation Fund, to accelerate decarbonisation efforts in the steel sector. In addition to funding, startups will receive advice from the corporate’s research and development, technology commercialisation and business mentoring teams.

US-based venture capital firm Hannah Grey has closed an oversubscribed fund backed by social media platform operator Twitter, equity management software provider Carta and investment bank JPMorgan at $51.6m. Screendoor Partners, Stagwell Group, Insight Partners and Equity Alliance are also among its limited partners, as are unnamed foundations, fund of funds, family offices and strategic industry veterans.
