Ele.me orders $80m investment

Dianping, a China-based food listing service, has invested $80m in Ele.me, a China-based online food ordering company that targets students, according to Tech in Asia.

Ele.me’s service currently lists about 50,000 restaurants across 30 Chinese cities, and focuses on eateries around universities. It takes a small cut from each order made through its site.

The company previously raised $25m from venture capital firms Matrix Partners, Sequoia Capital and GSR Ventures in November 2013, and Matrix and GSR both contributed to undisclosed earlier rounds going back to 2011.

Although it has long been a big player in China’s food reviews and restaurant listings subsector, Dianping has only recently branched out into online ordering, launching its delivery service in Shanghai in January. Ele.me will be integrated into Dianping’s platform, but will continue to operate as a standalone service.
