Layer levels up with $14.5m series A

Layer, a US-based company that provides a communications platform for mobile and web apps, has raised $14.5m in series A funding, TechCrunch reported.

The series A round saw participation from Homebrew, AME Cloud Ventures, CrunchFund and Fuel Capital, and Layer’s post-money valuation was reportedly in the mid-$60m range.

Layer allows app developers to, through the insertion of fewer than 10 lines of code, add the ability for their users to send text, voice and video messages and even share files. The technology, however, is still in closed beta.

The total funding to date for Layer is $22m, after it secured $1.5m in a 2013 seed round featuring Bloomberg Beta, the corporate venturing subsidiary of Bloomberg, and a further $6m the following month.

Alongside this funding, Andy Vyrros, a former engineering head at Apple, has been appointed as chief technology officer.
