KDDI learns of Edmodo’s promise

Edmodo, a US-based communication service for teachers, has raised $30m in a series D round that featured participation from Japan-based telecommunications group KDDI through its Open Innovation Fund.

Venture Capital firm Index Ventures led the round.

The KDDI Open Innovation Fund is managed by venture capital firm Global Brain and invests in Japan-based and foreign companies.

Edmodo enables school classes to connect and collaborate. It also operates a third-party marketplace where developers can advertise their education apps on the Edmodo platform, which currently has over 600 apps available.

The company raised $25m in a 2012 series C funding round led by New Enterprise Associates that also included Greylock Partners, Benchmark Capital, Union Square Ventures and Learn Capital, and $15m in a series round in 2011 from Greylock and Benchmark.
