Ooyala acquires video ad platform Videoplaza

Videoplaza, a UK-based video management platform for advertisers, was acquired by personalised video company Ooyala on Monday, providing an exit to Qualcomm Ventures, the corporate venturing unit of semiconductor technology company Qualcomm.

Videoplaza is a video advertising platform which specialises in streaming ads across multiple devices. Its service is used by some of the world’s largest video publishers.

The acquisition and integration of Videoplaza’s service will allow Ooyala, which offers video publishing and analytics to advertisers to increase revenue, to strengthen its standing in the video ad market. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Sorosh Tavakoli, Videoplaza’s founder and chief executive, said: “This acquisition will allow us to expand our mission in helping broadcasters and premium publishers build highly profitable and sustainable businesses.”

Videoplaza raised $12m in a series B round in 2012 from Qualcomm Ventures, Innovacom, which acts as a corporate venturing subsidiary of telecommunications firm Orange, and venture capital firms Northzone and Creandum.

The company previously secured $4.8m in a series A round in 2010 from Northzone and Creandum, the latter of which also took part in Videoplaza’s $660,000 seed round in 2008.

The acquisition is Ooyala’s first since it was purchased by Australia-based telecommunications company Telstra for $270m in August this year.
