Skully races to $11m

Skully, the US-based manufacturer of a motorcycle helmet that includes a display for GPS navigation, has raised $11m in an early-stage round co-led by computing company Intel’s corporate venturing arm Intel Capital on Friday.

Walden Riverwood Ventures co-led the round with Intel, while Formation 8, Techstars, Eastlink Capital and Western Technology Investments also participated. The series A round included $2m in seed funding.

Skully raised $2.4m in a crowdfunding campaign in October 2014, outpacing its $250,000 target almost tenfold. The campaign resulted in $3.4m worth of pre-orders for the helmet.

The startup has developed a motorbike helmet that has an integrated display for GPS navigation and a wide-angle rear-view camera to eliminate blindspots as well as Bluetooth connectivity to handle phone calls.

Skully will use the cash injection to hire developers, designers, engineers and to expand customer service support.
