Weekly corporate venturing deal net: 6-10 April 2015

RefMe, the UK-based developer of a tool that can generate citations, reference lists and bibliographies, raised $5m on Tuesday in a series A round led by educational services company Gems Global, which invested $4m. The cash will be used to increase the size of RefMe’s engineering and data teams as it seeks to expand internationally.

Israel-based augmented reality technology developer Infinity Augmented Reality has closed a $5m series A round led by gambling game producer Sun Corporation, Globes reported on Wednesday. The round, which included Singulariteam and Platinum Partners, follows $2.5m secured from Credit Strategies and Genesis Angels Fund in March 2014 and will be used to further develop the company’s core software.

C Channel, a Japan-based startup focused on one minute-long online videos, launched today with ¥500m ($4.2m) of funding from backers including e-commerce company Rakuten, internet media companies Nexyz and Gree, GMO Venture Partners, which acts as the corporate venturing arm of internet company GMO, online beauty site I-Style, culture website Asobi System, corporate-backed venture capital fund B Dash Ventures and digital marketing company MAK Corporation.

Healthcare compliance company Verisys made a “multimillion-dollar” investment in Accreditrust, the US-based developer of a credentials verification platform, on Monday. The funding will support further development of Accreditrust’s TrueCred software, which it claims allows users to process portable, independently verifiable and tamper-proof credentials.

ScoreStream, the US-based developer of a crowdsourced sports photos and results service, has raised $2m in a seed round led by Sinclair Digital Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of television and telecommunications company Sinclair Broadcasting, Xconomy reported on Monday. Avalon Ventures and New Enterprise Associates also participated in the round, having provided an $800,000 convertible note for ScoreStream in July 2014.

Embera NeuroTherapeutics, a US-based company developing treatments for smoking, cocaine and other addictions, received $2m in series A-2 financing today from pharmaceutical company HRA Pharma, existing investors, angel groups and private individuals. Embera has now raised $8.4m since 2007, according to SEC filings, and previous investors include Louisiana Ventures and Themelios Ventures.

Australia-based cybersecurity company TokenOne has secured an undisclosed amount of funding from a series C round led by Singtel Innov8, the corporate venturing subsidiary of telecommunications company SingTel Innov8, which invested as part of its collaboration with another telecoms company, Optus, according to StartupSmart. The round also featured Black Sheep Capital, Mirin Capital and existing investor BlueChilli, which previously invested in TokenOne in October 2014.

Israel-based diabetes treatment developer DreaMed Diabetes received $2m in equity funding from medical devices maker Medtronic on Monday as part of a development and license agreement that will involve DreaMed’s artificial pancreas algorithm being incorporated into Medtronic’s insulin pumps. DreaMed will also be paid royalties from the agreement in future.

Sonormed, the Germany-based developer of a tinnitus treatment that individually filters the affected patient’s favourite music, has received an undisclosed amount of series A funding from corporate-backed VC fund High-Tech Gruenderfonds, Innovationsstarter Fonds Hamburg, Quotas Beteiligungs and Heiko Hubertz. The funding will go to corporate expansion and product development.

Ittavi, the US-based developer of child support payment platform SupportPay, has raised $1.5m from VC firm T5 Capital Partners and undisclosed high net-worth individuals, bringing its total seed funding to $2.6m. The startup raised the first tranche from cloud computing company Salesforce.com, Draper Associates, TEC Ventures, Broadway Angels, Aspect Ventures and RPM Ventures in May 2014.

US-based open source network virtualisation technology startup Akanda raised an undisclosed sum in a series A round led by New Dream Network, the parent company of web hosting provider DreamHost, on Monday. The round, which will be support the expansion of Akanda’s technical team and the development of its platform, also included The Fabric, Double M Partners, Rincon Venture Partners, DreamHost CEO Simon Anderson and Matt Ocko.

B Dash Ventures has invested an invested an undisclosed sum in Fukurou Labo, a Japan-based developer of marketing technology for mobile apps, Tech in Asia reported on Tuesday. The funding was announced alongside the launch of Circuit, the startup’s deep link’ optimisation platform.

Blisby, a Thailand-based startup that sells craft products by local artisans online, has secured $300,000 in a round backed by internet company DeNA, East Ventures and 500 Startups subsidiaries 500 Tuk Tuks and 500 Durians, Tech in Asia reported on Thursday. It will use the funding to introduce new features to its platform and expand into other markets beginning with Indonesia and Malaysia.

Cogito, the Philippines-based creator of a platform that can automate workflow and transferring it to the cloud, secured an undisclosed amount of seed funding from Kickstart Ventures, the early-stage corporate venturing subsidiary of telecommunications company Globe Telecom, Tech in Asia reported today. The cash will go to business development, marketing and product development.
