Corporates make Switch for $35m series C

US-based cloud-based communications services provider Switch Communications secured $35m yesterday in a series C round featuring telecommunications firm SoftBank and Google Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of internet company Google.

Venture capital firm Amasia led the round, which also included VC firms Felicis Ventures, Work-Bench Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz.

Switch Communications was founded in 2011 as a software accelerator called Firespotter Labs. It renamed itself in October 2014, pivoting to focus on its cloud-based telephony platforms for businesses, Switch and UberConference.

Google Ventures provided $5m of series A funding for Switch in 2011, returning the following year for a $15m series B round led by Andreessen Horowitz.

Craig Walker, CEO of Switch Communications, said: “Our momentum has been extraordinary as a result of our immediate traction with small and medium-sized enterprises and a high level of demand from very large enterprises, many of which are already in the first stages of global deployments.

“We are delighted to have the backing of such a diverse group of strategic investors, together with continued support from our existing partners, to build on this momentum and more rapidly address the needs of large global enterprises.”
