Smartphone manufacturer Blackberry signed an agreement yesterday to acquire US-based communications platform AtHoc for an undisclosed sum, giving an exit to semiconductor technology producer Intel.
AtHoc has created a communication platform that provides secure real-time alerts for real-world crises. The technology will be integrated into Blackberry’s enterprise offering, while AtHoc will develop a range of new applications for Blackberry’s platform post-acquisition.
Intel’s corporate venturing unit, Intel Capital, led a $5.6m series B round for AtHoc in 2012 that also included Greylock Partners, I-Hatch Ventures and undisclosed individual investors.
Greylock also invested in the $2.6m series A round raised by AtHoc in 2005 at the time of its launch.
Guy Miasnik, president and CEO of AtHoc, said: “Becoming part of Blackberry will give us the ability to scale more quickly to expand our global reach and introduce new applications for the AtHoc platform, while continuing to serve our government and enterprise customers.”
