Comcast Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of cable and mass media company Comcast, led a $6m series A round yesterday for US-based virtual reality content producer Baobab Studios.
The round also included Samsung Ventures, which acts as Samsung’s corporate venturing vehicle, smartphone maker HTC, online media company Chernin Group, Advancit Capital, Box Group, Peter Thiel and Mark Pincus.
Baobab produces animated films to be shown on virtual reality headsets. The trailer for the company’s first movie, “Invasion” is available on Samsung’s Milk VR platform and the short film is expected to be released in early 2016.
Baobab hopes to also join forces with HTC in the near future to distribute its content for the smartphone company’s Vive headset.
Maureen Fan, CEO of Baobab, said: “We are excited to be working with Gavin, Michael and the team at Comcast Ventures. The team was the natural choice to lead our series A with their understanding of virtual reality, distribution and content. We look forward to collaborating with Comcast NBCUniversal.”
