Joyent, a US-based developer of cloud computing technology backed by Intel, has acquired Layerboom Systems, a Canadian provider of software, for an undisclosed sum. In November, Joyent raised $8.5m from Intel Capital, the corporate venturing division of semiconductor maker Intel, according to a US filing published by news provider GigaOm.
GigaOm also said computer maker Dell had invested alongside Intel Capital after initial funding for Joyent from angel investor Peter Thiel, former chief executive of money transfer company PayPal.
At the time of the investment, Lisa Lambert, vice president of Intel Capital, said: "Cloud computing technologies play a crucial role in allowing companies to scale their data center infrastructure to meet performance and TCO [total cost of ownership] requirements.
"Joyent’s approach to flexible and cost-effective cloud control and cloud development set it apart and provides measureable performance advantages versus the competition in this fast growing sector."
Industry analyst Gartner Group predicted the market for cloud computing services would exceed $14bn by 2014. Revenue growth in cloud computing topped 17% from 2008 to 2009.
