Over the first quarter of 2016, we at GCV Analytics have tracked 423 deals worth more than $18.9bn, up 15% in value vis-à-vis the first quarter of the previous year, estimated at $16.3bn. The quarter’s totals compare also very favourably with those of the previous one (the last three months of 2015), when an estimated $11.3bn of corporate venture capital was deployed globally. The overwhelming majority of these corporate VC deals took place not only in North America (primarily, the U.S. which is hardly surprising), but also in China, thanks to massive deployment of capital by China-based internet giants Alibaba and Tencent. The most coveted startups and emerging enterprises are from the IT and Financial services sectors, as shown on the heatmap here.
