Doppler Labs tunes into $24m

US-based wireless earplug producer Doppler Labs secured $24m in series B+ funding on Tuesday from Peter Chernin, his media conglomerate Chernin Group and assorted angel investors.

Chernin Group previously led the round’s $17m first close in July 2015, investing with events promoter Live Nation Entertainment, talent and literary agency William Morris Endeavor, record label Universal Music Group, Wildcat Capital Management and Acequia Capital.

Founded in 2013, Doppler produces a wireless earphone set (pictured) that is controlled through a mobile app, letting users filter out specific sounds. The technology makes it possible, for example, to listen to music while riding a bike but remain aware of surrounding vehicles.

Dubbed Here One, the product is the mass market version of predecessor Here Active Listening, which the company shipped in January 2016 to 10,000 early adopters.

The additional capital will allow Doppler to prepare for the release of Here One in time for Christmas, hire engineering staff and further develop its platform.

Doppler has secured a total of $50m to date, according to its latest press release, though it has not confirmed details about earlier funding rounds. The company obtained at least $1m in seed funding, according to TechCrunch, and completed a $635,000 crowdfunding campaign in July 2015.
