Samsung helps breathe $4.5m into Bitfinder

Bitfinder, the US-based developer of an air quality monitor called Awair, completed a $4.5m series A round yesterday that included electronics manufacturer Samsung.

Venture capital firm Altos Ventures led the round, with Samsung investing through its corporate venturing unit, Samsung Ventures. It follows a regulatory filing earlier this month indicating the company had raised $6.2m in equity funding.

Bitfinder’s flagship product is Awair+, a smart device that continually assesses the quality of the surrounding air based on temperature, humidity and the levels of CO2, dust and volatile organic compounds.

Users can set levels in order to boost productivity, fight allergies or get a good night sleep, and can receive notifications or recommendations through their smartphones.

The series A funding will support development of a product that can convert humidifiers and ceiling fans into smart products utilising Awair+ technology.

Founded in 2013, Bitfinder had raised $2.2m in seed capital from investors including Kakao Ventures, the corporate venturing subsidiary of messaging app developer Kakao, R/GA Ventures and Global Brain as of January this year.
