MealPal makes friends with Comcast Ventures

MealPal, the US-based operator of a subscription lunch service, received $15m yesterday in a series A round led by mass media group Comcast’s corporate venture capital unit, Comcast Ventures.

Venture capital firms Bessemer Venture Partners and NextView Ventures also took part in the round, as did VC network Haystack Partners.

MealPal runs a subscription-based service that involves restaurants offering a lunch dish each day on the company’s platform. Nearby subscribers can then browse their local restaurants on the app and pre-order a meal that can be picked up without having to wait in line.

The company launched its service in Miami, Florida, in January 2016 and announced its series A funding as it began operations in London, its eighth market and its first outside the US. It has signed up 125 participating restaurants in London so far.

Comcast Ventures principal Daniel Gulati said: “MealPal has built an exciting business in the huge, but overlooked meal takeout space, using technology to create a win-win for consumers and restaurants.

“Their early traction has been outstanding, and we could not be more excited to partner with [CEO Mary Biggins] and the team.”
