BMW takes a ride on Skurt

Automotive manufacturer BMW has invested in US-based on-demand car rental service Skurt as part of a $10m series A round led by venture capital firm Upfront Ventures.

The round also featured venture capital firms Cross Culture Ventures, Expansion VC and Greycroft as well as retired basketball player Magic Johnson.

Founded in 2015, Skurt has developed a mobile app that enables users to book a rental car and have it delivered to them within the hour. Once they have finished a representative of the company comes to pick up the vehicle.

Skurt secures the vehicles from fleet operators ranging from traditional rental car firms to used car dealers or automakers with excess stock. It operates in Los Angeles, San Diego and Miami but plans to expand to other large cities within the next year.

The round follows a $1.3m seed round in October 2015 backed by Upfront Ventures and angel investors Adam Goldstein, Errol Damelin, Mark Troughton and Scott Marlette.
