Corporate venturing deal net: 8-12 January 2018

Computing company IBM invested an undisclosed amount in US-based sales software provider Apttus yesterday that will be added to the $55m in series E funding it raised in September 2017 from enterprise sales software producer Salesforce’s corporate venturing unit, Salesforce Ventures, as well as Premji Invest, K1 Investment Management and Iconiq Capital. The September round took the company’s total funding to $329m, and its other investors include Kuwait Investment Authority and Gulf Islamic Investments.

US-based smart home technology developer Yonomi secured $5m on Monday in a series A round led by car component producer Gentex that included security product maker Allegion, which participated as an existing investor. Yonomi raised $950,000 in a convertible note round that closed in April 2016 according to a regulatory filing, and will use the latest funding to expand internationally and further develop its technology platform.

Automotive component supplier Denso has made “a significant investment” in US-based mobility system startup ActiveScaler as part of a seed round of undisclosed size. The proceeds from the round, which also featured Sumitomo Corporation of Americas, the local subsidiary of Japan-based conglomerate Sumitomo, will support the development of ActiveScaler’s technology.

Maxim Ventures, the corporate venture capital subsidiary of sensor and integrated circuit technology producer Maxim Integrated Products, invested an undisclosed amount in US-based diagnostic testing technology startup Two Pore Guys (2PG) on Tuesday as part of a collaboration agreement. 2PG closed a $24.5m series A round led by VC firm Khosla Ventures in April 2017, and raised $4.6m in debt financing last week according to a securities filing.

Adapsyn Bioscience, a Canada-based startup developing medicines from organic biomolecules, received an undisclosed amount of funding from Pfizer R&D Innovate, a subsidiary of pharmaceutical firm Pfizer, and VC firm Genesys Capital on Tuesday. Pfizer participated as part of a research collaboration agreement, and Margi McLoughlin, an executive director at Pfizer, will join Adapsyn’s board of directors.

InMotion Ventures, the strategic investment vehicle for automotive manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover, provided $3m of funding for Voyage, the US-based developer of an autonomous taxi service, yesterday. It invested in the company as part of a round of undisclosed size that includes Khosla Ventures, SV Angel, Initialized Capital, Amino Capital and CRV, and Voyage plans to begin testing its self-driving taxis on Californian roads later this year.

Health insurance provider Horizon Healthcare Services led a round of undisclosed size for US-based patient engagement and care navigation software developer Pager yesterday. The round also featured Vero Norte, an investment arm of insurance firm Grupo Sura, as well as existing backers Lux Capital, Goodwater Capital and New Enterprise Associates, and follows $29.6m from investors including Sound Ventures, Montage Ventures and Summation Health Ventures, the firm formed by care providers Cedars-Sinai and MemorialCare.

Reix Corporation, a US-based developer of data software for the real estate industry, closed a series A round of undisclosed size on Monday having raised money from investors including real estate software and services provider Altus Group and real estate data provider Real Capital Analytics. The corporates participated together with undisclosed family offices, and the capital will go to expanding the startup’s Mango and Siila property transaction tracking products.

US-based healthcare management technology provider Synzi spun out Stratus Video, the creator of a healthcare-focused communication and consultation platform that features a language translation element, on Monday with an undisclosed amount of funding from investment firm Kinderhook Industries. Stratus launched the latest version of its video remote interpretation platform in November 2017.

E-commerce firm Alibaba’s Taiwan Entrepreneurs Fund has led a $2.75m funding round for Taiwan-based e-commerce services provider Citiesocial, DealStreetAsia reported on Monday. The round included CDIB Capital, the international investment branch of merchant bank China Development Financial, and Cherubic Ventures, the VC firm that led Citiesocial’s June 2016 seed round.

Redgate Investments, an affiliate of data and software tool provider Redgate Software, invested an undisclosed amount in Croatia-based enterprise software developer SysKit on Tuesday. The funding was supplied as part of a deal where Redgate Software acquired a data identification tool called SQL Manager from SysKit.

Ripple, a US-based networking app spun out from swipe-based dating app Tinder, launched on Monday with an undisclosed amount of funding from Tinder owner Match Group, TechCrunch reported. Match, which is owned by online media group IAC, has a minority stake in the startup, which has also received some funding from its founders, all of which previously worked at Tinder.

Pyreos, a UK-based infrared sensor producer backed by industrial product and appliance manufacturers Robert Bosch and Siemens, raised £1.7m ($2.3m) on Tuesday in a round led by family office Perscitus that included undisclosed existing investors. The company has now raised approximately $30m since it was founded in 2007 and its existing backers include Bosch subsidiary Robert Bosch Venture Capital, Siemens unit Siemens Technology Accelerator, London Business Angels, Scottish Investment Bank and Seraphim Capital.

US-based companion robot developer Intuition Robotics announced on Monday it has received an investment from Samsung Next, a corporate VC vehicle for consumer electronics manufacturer Samsung, as well as Sparx Group and Glory Ventures to increase its overall funding to $22m. The capital follows $20m from Bloomberg Beta and Toyota AI Ventures, respective subsidiaries of media group Bloomberg and carmaker Toyota, as well as robotics technology provider iRobot, OurCrowd, Maniv Mobility, Terra Venture Partners and Mirai Creation Investment across two rounds.

E-commerce and cloud computing company Amazon has provided an undisclosed amount of funding for June Life, the US-based creator of intelligent oven June Oven, through its Alexa Fund. June’s last funding was a $22.5m series A round in March 2016 that was led by Eclipse and backed by existing investors including First Round Capital, Foundry Group and Lerer Hippeau Ventures.
