IDG Ventures India, a corporate venturing unit of US publisher International Data Group, has joined a consortium investing R22 crore ($5m) in iProf Learning Solutions, a company offering electronic learning services.

Alongside IDG in the round is venture capital firm Norwest Venture Partners.

There are nearly 20 of iProf’s iStudy Zones, which is expected to increase to 100 by the end of the year.

Separately, IDG’s China fund has invested in the series B round of ShineOn, a local developer of light-emitting diodes.

ShineOn has raised $51.5m in total and alongside IDG-Accel Capital in the consortium are venture capital firms Mayfield Fund, GSR Ventures and Northern Light Ventures.

Navin Chaddha, managing director of Mayfield, said: "The lighting industry is poised to follow the evolution of the IT [information technology] industry over the past three decades, with giants that will be created at the chip, component, system and software layers."
