Qualcomm backs Cavendish Kinetics

Qualcomm Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of technology equipment maker Qualcomm, has joined an investor group which includes venture capital firms Tallwood Venture Capital, Wellington Partners Venture Capital and several other of US and Netherlands-based semiconductor manufacturer Cavendish Kinetics’ previous investors in a $10m series B round extension.

Tallwood and Wellington led a $15.5m second round funding for Cavendish in May 2006. That round also included venture capital firms Celtic House Venture Partners, Clarium Holdings, Torteval Investments and an unnamed private investor.

Cavendish Kinetics will use the funds to produce radio frequency [RF] tuning products based on its proprietary NanoMech technology.  Initial products target antenna tuners and impedance matching devices in mobile devices and are expected to sample early next year.

Nagraj Kashyap, vice president of Qualcomm Ventures, said: "Cavendish technology provides new standards of performance for [Radio Frequency tuning] circuits which are critically needed for the expanding frequency bands that future mobile devices will utilise."
