Branson part of a Square deal

Mobile payments company Square revealed on Tuesday that British entrepreneur and chairman of the Virgin Group Richard Branson was among the investors in the company, which closed its series B and C rounds in September, having taken its total funding to more than $140m.

Branson told technology venture website VentureBeat: "In recent years, thanks in part to Virgin America (being based in the Silicon Valley and doing a great job serving tech-savvy guests), I’ve learned more about tech in general and social media in particular – and always look for companies that use business as a force for good."

Square’s backers in the September rounds were venture capital firms Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, and investment firm Tiger Global Management, while credit card company Visa also made an investment earlier in the year.
