Deutsche Telekom lights the way to Skorpios

US-based optical communications company Skorpios Technologies secured $2m on Tuesday from T-Venture, the corporate venturing unit belonging to telecommunications firm Deutsche Telekom, bringing its series B financing to $21m.

Skorpios had already raised $19m in series B funding, in September, from telecommunications conglomerates Ericsson and Nokia Siemens Networks, as well as private equity and venture capital (VC) firm Sun Mountain Capital and VC fund the Cottonwood Technology Fund.

Skorpios previously raised $2.2m in series A funding from Cottonwood and Sun Mountain. The current funding will be invested in expanding Skorpios’ infrastructure and in the full commercialisation of its semiconductor technology for use in optical networking equipment.

Bruno Jacobfeuerborn, director of technology for Deutsche Telekom, said: "The integration of today’s separated building blocks into a single chip provides various important effects for our network…but also the economic enabling of new technologies that are essential to our strategy. We are happy to support Skorpios in the realization of this disruptive approach with the investment from T-Venture."
