US-based video game studio Singularity 6 emerged from stealth on Tuesday with $16.5m in funding from investors including FunPlus Ventures, the investment arm of interactive entertainment producer FunPlus, VentureBeat reported.
Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz led the series A round, which also featured London Venture Partners, the seed-stage fund that had supplied $2.5m in seed capital for the startup in September 2018.
Singularity 6 was founded by CEO Anthony Leung and game director Aidan Karabaich, both of whom used to be lead game designers for Riot Games, the studio best known for multiplayer battle arena title League of Legends.
The company has not disclosed details of its first title but Karabaich said in a blog post this week that it is concentrating on large-scale social gaming, and VentureBeat reports that the game will feature virtual community building and take place in a high fantasy setting.
Leung said in a statement: “We started Singularity 6 because we knew that games are significant on a personal level, they are more than mere entertainment, but rather a path to community, friendships and a real sense of belonging.
“Games have the power to connect the world and establish vibrant communities whose inhabitants can combine their sense of curiosity and exploration with a true sense of purpose.”
