Hitachi helps Nabsys nab $21m

Electronics manufacturer Hitachi High-Technologies Corporation has led a $21m funding round for US-based genome mapping technology developer Nabsys.

Nabsys’ genome mapping system involves the use of electronic nanochannel detectors to conduct analysis of long DNA molecules at high velocity. The funding will be used to finish and commercially launch its whole-genome electronic mapping platform product.

The company had previously raised a total of $80m according to securities filings, including $25.5m from unnamed investors in 2014 and $35m the year before.

Stata Venture Partners led Nabsys’ $10m series C round in 2011, following $7m the previous year, $1m in 2009 and $1.5m in 2007.

Tsuyoshi Ogino, general manager, of Hitachi High-Technologies’ innovation division, said: “There is a strong need for accurate, robust and scalable genomic structural analysis for cytogenetic, cancer and infectious disease research. Hitachi High-Technologies determined that the Nabsys HD-Mapping approach effectively supports this need.

“The company is also a strong fit with our strategy for continued advanced R&D with strategic investments in life sciences.”
