Airbnb books $475m series D

US-based holiday room marketplace Airbnb officially closed a $475m series D round on Friday, according to an SEC filing.

The round was led by private equity firm TPG and also featured venture capital firm Sequoia Capital and investment firms Dragoneer and T. Rowe Price.

Airbnb has now raised approximately $795m in total funding, including $200m from a series C round in October 2013 that included AOL-backed venture firm Crunchfund and $112m from a 2011 series B round that included Crunchfund and DST Global, the venture fund spun off from internet company Mail.ru.

Other past backers include Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst Partners, SV Angel, and individual investors including Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and actor Ashton Kutcher.

Reports that Airbnb had closed a massive funding round initially emerged in April, with the exact amount being placed at somewhere between $450m and $500m at a $10bn valuation.

Founded in 2008, Airbnb enables users to list rooms in their homes online, offering them to travellers.in return for a fee, and the company continues to grow extremely quickly, launching a dedicated business service late last month.

However, it has faced increasing regulatory trouble in various cities over the past few months as the borders between the unlicensed service it offers and the formal one already provided by the existing hospitality industry appears to get ever closer, while reports have also emerged of.squatters abusing the service.
