Payment services firm American Express has agreed to purchase US-based restaurant booking platform Resy, which is backed by accommodation marketplace Airbnb and payment technology producer First Data Corporation, for an undisclosed amount.
Founded in 2014, Resy has developed an online table reservation and booking platform that is available in 4,000 restaurants across 10 countries including the UK, Canada, Australia and the US, where it is present in 154 US cities.
Airbnb led a $13m series A round for Resy in 2017, participating alongside First Data, investment firm RSE Ventures and venture capital fund Lerer Hippeau.
The company had previously secured $2m in a 2014 seed round featuring Lerer Hippeau, Vayner/RSE, TomsCapital/Panarea Capital, A-Grade Holdings, Slow Ventures and angel investor Ken Austin.
Chris Cracchiolo, senior vice-president of global loyalty and benefits for American Express, said: “Resy was created to both connect people who love dining out with new, notable and hard to get into restaurants across the globe, as well as help restaurants’ businesses grow and thrive.
“Similarly, American Express has strong relationships with premium dining partners and restaurants across the globe, and provides our card members with access to incredible dining experiences through our exclusive benefits and programs.”
American Express recently agreed to buy online airport lounge booking platform LoungeBuddy, and completed the purchase of Japan-based restaurant booking app developer Pocket Concierge in January this year. It acquired Mezi, the developer of a digital travel assistant, in early 2018.
