US-based task services provider Umbrella has been acquired by home improvement marketplace Angi Homeservices for an undisclosed amount, allowing internet technology group Alphabet to exit, Fast Company has reported.
Founded in 2017, Umbrella provides a online platform that connects people over the age of 60 with workers that will help them with tasks such as home repairs and chores,
The company operates a membership model that charges customers $20 per hour for small tasks including gardening, plumbing and home organising.
Alphabet’s urban infrastructure subsidiary, Sidewalk Labs, participated in a $5m seed round for Umbrella in July 2019 that was led by Thrive Capital and backed by Inspired Capital, Refactor Capital, Maveron, Collaborative Fund, Trail Mix Ventures and Box Group.
Angi Homeservices is 80% owned by internet and media conglomerate IAC, which formed the business through the merger of service reviewing platform Angie’s List and home improvement marketplace HomeAdvisor in 2017.
