Astronomer lands $213m in series C funding

US-based data analytics software provider Astronomer secured $213m in series C funding yesterday from investors including Salesforce Ventures, the corporate venture capital subsidiary of enterprise software provider Salesforce.

Growth equity firm Insight Partners led the round, which also featured investment banking firm JP Morgan, Meritech Capital, K5 Global, Sutter Hill Ventures, Sierra Ventures and Venrock.

Astronomer has developed data orchestration tools powered by open-source workflow software platform Apache Airflow, in essence acting as connective tissue enabling multiple data services to create a cohesive pipeline.

The funding will help the company acquire Datakin, a US-based data lineage and management software provider that helps organise data flows. It also plans to grow its engineering and customer-facing teams, along with its platform and scale its go-to-market activities.

Venrock had previously led Astronomer’s $13.6m series A round, in mid-2020, which also featured Bain Capital Ventures, Refinery Ventures, Grand Ventures, Sierra Ventures and Frontline Ventures. Details of its series B funding could not be ascertained.

The company had previously raised $11.1m across three rounds up to 2019, from investors including Sierra Ventures, Bain Capital Ventures, Refinery Ventures, Frontline Capital Ventures, CincyTech, Wireframe Ventures and Grand Ventures, Drummond Road Capital, Core Network, M25 Group, Connetic Ventures, AngelPad, 500 Startups and First Ascent.

Astronomer chief executive Joe Otto said: “As companies of all sizes struggle to make sense of their data, data orchestration has become a competitive necessity. At the same time, data teams must be able to trust their data to effectively extract its value.

“By integrating Datakin’s intuitive data lineage features with Astronomer, our customers are able to build faster, run with confidence and reduce their operational risks. We are excited to soon unveil what is next from our team, fuelled by our series C and the incredible support of our investors.”
