Autonomous driving technology developer Aurora intends to buy Blackmore Sensors and Analytics, a US-based light detection technology maker backed by carmakers BMW and Toyota, for an undisclosed amount.
Founded in 2016, Blackmore is developing light detection and ranging (lidar) technology-based sensors that use light to pinpoint objects and measure distance rather than the traditional method of radio signals.
The sensors leverage frequency-modulated continuous waves of light to detect objects at a greater range whilst using less power.
BMW led an $18m series B round for Blackmore Sensors in March 2018, through its strategic investment subsidiary, BMW i Ventures.
Toyota also took part in the round, through its Toyota AI Ventures unit, along with investment firm Millennium Technology Value Partners and venture capital firm Next Frontier Capital. The latter two had previously co-led Blackmore’s $3.5m series A round in 2016.
Aurora said in a statement: “Ultimately we believe that Blackmore’s technology will allow us to deliver a safer, more efficient, and more cost-effective driver than even the best systems available on the market today.”
