AAA Beginning of a new era

Beginning of a new era

This month sees a redesign of the Global Corporate Venturing monthly magazine, which marks the end of two years in business.

We are, therefore, no longer a start-up but a small company – for which we thank the readers, subscribers and advertisers who have helped us achieve this milestone and my colleagues for their tireless support and guidance.

The redesign will allow us to concentrate the magazine on the industry data and its analysis with greater focus on the graphics and how they are presented.

The monthly data remains a snapshot of the trends but will complement the website where the information is stored and is currently being adapted to allow premium subscribers to create their own bespoke reports.

Our proprietary information is complemented by Dow Jones VentureSource’s data about how corporate venturing fits into the wider venture capital industry – my thanks to my former employer for the use of their information for this purpose. Please reach out to Guido Schenk for more about the Dow Jones service.

The second major alteration will be to bring the monthly feature on a specific sector or issue closer to the front of the magazine. May’s feature on the second annual Global Corporate Venturing Awards will be published as a separate supplement in time for the presentations and Gala dinner at the Royal Exchange, London, on May 14.

June’s issue will be on the healthcare sector as we start again each of the 10 sectoral analyses, looking at the fundraising trends in each sector, the people moves and important deals using our data and how it fits into the wider asset management industry and the changes from previous years and strategic issues affecting the industries.

Naturally, the magazine is keeping its selection of thought-leaders, insiders and contrarian thinkers in its comment section, including the must-read Gaule’s Question Time.

There is also a new section looking at how corporations are working with universities to innovate and encourage entrepreneurialism, which is to complement our second title, Global University Venturing.

Last month, we had the privilege and pleasure of chatting with computer group IBM’s Claudia Fan Munce and Jim Spohrer, in partnership with tech transfer organisation NCET2 – if you want to add your thoughts to the webinar series, which next features Cisco (May 24) and then Takeda, let me know.

To help with signposting the great insights in the magazine, we have extended the contents pages to provide quick links and the main bullet points from each article.

And, with so much news happening each month, we have provided a handy two-page guide of the biggest deals, fundraisings and people and other news. Each of these news-in-briefs is taken from our website, which provides daily coverage of the industry.

Talking points from the news are also discussed at our 800-member Linked In group, Global Corporate Venturing, so feel free to share your thoughts there, albeit bearing in mind our corporate motto taken from David Hume’s work: "Truth springs from argument among good friends."

This motto has guided us through the past two years and hopefully will help us steer a course where we can best serve the community so it helps entrepreneurs and parent organisations.

Our awards, selected by the Global Corporate Venturing advisory board of industry experts – for which my thanks to you all, showcases the many and varied achievements of the industry and will be a wonderful evening following a day of searching for the best entrepreneurs.

This Tech Scout Challenge and Awards Gala are respectively nearly sold out and sold out, and come ahead of our Symposium at Centre Point, London, on May 15. We have extended the capacity for this Symposium in response to demand for what promises to be a wonderful day – click here for the agenda and here for remaining tickets.

All this, however, is only possible due to the help and support of our sponsors and partners – UKTI, Baker Botts, SVB, DLA Piper, Corven and NCET2 – and the event advisory board – Andrew Gaule, Heidi Mason, Mark Radcliffe and John Taysom.

Thank you for what will be the perfect celebration of the past two years and the perfect way into the future of continued service to you all – please let me know how we can help you achieve your goals.
