Cadence catches InspectAR in acquisition deal

Design automation software producer Cadence Design Systems has acquired InspectAR, a Canada-based developer of circuit-board printing technology, for an undisclosed amount, allowing corporates Royal Circuit Solutions and Advanced Assembly to exit.

InspectAR provides augmented reality software tools for the inspection of printed circuit boards (PCBs): the part of a computer to which integrated circuits are attached and through which they are electronically connected.

The software overlays the PCB with schematics in real time to assist with inspection, debugging, reworking and assembly. InspectAR was founded out of Memorial University’s Centre for Entrepreneurship in 2018.

The company will continue to operate independently and its staff will remain at its current offices in Newfoundland. The acquisition will allow it to expand its capabilities to support a wider range of electronic design automation software and potentially tap into a bigger customer base.

PCB manufacturers Royal Circuit Solutions and Advanced Assembly had provided $850,000 in funding for InspectAR in January this year.
