US-headquartered internet technology conglomerate Alphabet’s CapitalG unit promoted nine team members in 2021, it disclosed yesterday, after a successful year with six initial public offerings, an acquisition and multiple new investments.
CapitalG, which focuses on growth equity deals, stated in a blog post: “Whether we are scouring the globe for the world’s most transformative technology companies or working closely with portfolio leaders on go-to-market, product and engineering, or people and talent operations, people are at the heart of everything we do.
“Today we are thrilled to recognise nine team members who have been promoted during the past calendar year. Each has already contributed meaningfully to the success of our firm and portfolio companies, and we cannot wait to see how they deepen their impact in their expanded roles.”
Former partner Jesse Wedler was named a general partner at CapitalG having been with the unit since its formation in 2013. He was involved in investments such as the now-publicly listed Airbnb and Duolingo as well as more recent deals for ID.me, Mantl and Notarize, and his new role entails sharpening his focus on software and financial technology infrastructure deals alongside the senior leadership team.
Jackson Georges had joined CapitalG in 2018 as a vice-president (VP) before being made partner three years later, helping the fund’s enterprise portfolio companies grow through strategic alliances. He was promoted to growth partner and will manage the team advising portfolio companies on scaling their businesses.
James Luo, who had also been with the CapitalG team since 2018, became an investment partner and will concentrate on infrastructure software areas such as cybersecurity, networking and developer platforms and tools. His deals have included Expel, Dataiku and Orca Security.
Jamie Rosen, Jeremy Zhu and Nina Gerson have meanwhile taken investment VP positions. Rosen’s areas of interest include cybersecurity, software and fintech infrastructure while Zhu helped CapitalG enter Southeast Asia through an investment in Lummo and Gerson has backed financial and healthcare technology developers such as Strive Health and Next Insurance.
In addition, the unit has promoted senior counsel Brian Osimiri to associate general counsel, senior data scientist Xiaoping Feng to staff data scientist and growth lead Sadasia McCutchen to growth VP. Lauren Illovsky, who had been a talent executive at sister unit Gradient Ventures, was taken on board for a similar role in October 2021.
