Hanwha Impact, a subsidiary of diversified conglomerate Hanwha Group, has led a $35m series B round for Catalog, a US-based developer of DNA data storage technology.
Catalog is working on a new method of storing digital information by using synthetic DNA, a technology which could eventually be used to run computational processes.
The company will use the funding to further develop its proprietary technology and build up a network of partners, collaborators and users of DNA-based computing.
The other participants in the round were not disclosed. Airbus Ventures, the corporate venturing unit for aerospace manufacturer Airbus, contributed to a $10m series A round for Catalog in September 2020 that was led by Horizons Ventures.
Catalog had raised $9m in a 2018 round led by New Enterprise Associates that also featured messaging platform developer Line, OS Fund, Day One Ventures, Data Collective, Green Bay Ventures, AME Cloud Ventures and Industry Ventures.
Baidu Ventures, the corporate venture capital arm of internet group Baidu, is listed as an existing investor on Catalog’s website, as is law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
The company’s other existing backers include Prelude Venture, Correlation Ventures, Abstract Ventures, Anorak Ventures, Cantos Ventures, Civilisation Ventures, Fifty Years, Kauffman Fellows, Pathbreaker Ventures, OSV StarVest Partners, Starlight Ventures, Acme, Prefix Capital, Hemisphere Ventures, Dayli Partners and Nextrans.
