Charles swings Samsung Catalyst promotion

Samsung Catalyst Fund, a venture capital fund owned by South Korea-based electronics manufacturer Samsung, has promoted Jonathan Charles to director, according to Strictly VC.

Charles joined Samsung’s evergreen multi-stage fund as a principal in 2013 shortly after its launch, and has since worked on sourcing seed and growth-stage investments.

During his time at the fund Charles has focused on investing in autonomous and connected cars, robotics, internet-of-things (IoT) technology, consumer electronics, cloud and data infrastructure services, as well as developers of analytics technologies such as machine learning and advanced algorithms.

Before being hired by Samsung, Charles held business development and product marketing roles at RoamBi, a data analytics platform that was purchased by software company SAP.

Charles had previously worked in the mobile business development team at electronics producer Apple, as an investment banker at Jefferies and as an investment associate at venture capital fund Apjohn Ventures.

Samsung launched Catalyst Fund in 2013 to invest in IoT, artificial intelligence, digital health, automotive mobility, security, device and cloud infrastructure technology startups.

The unit’s portfolio currently includes machine intelligence technology developer Graphcore, mobile data analysis technology provider Sentiance and computer vision technology producer Allegro.AI.

The vehicle has also made limited partner commitments to funds managed by Amadeus Capital, TriVentures and Samsara Biocapital.
