Ciitizen records $17m series A round

Verily, the life science subsidiary of internet and technology group Alphabet, has taken part in a $17m series A round for Ciitizen, the US-based operator of a healthcare records management platform.

The round was led by Andreessen Horowitz and included fellow venture capital firm Section 32.

Founded in 2017, Ciitizen operates an online platform that collects and organises a patient’s personal medical records into a single digital profile which can be shared with healthcare professionals.

The company said it will use the new funds to support its product development initiatives and fund commercial operations.

Vijay Pande, general partner of Andreessen Horowitz’s Bio fund, will join Ciitizen’s board of directors in conjunction with the funding. Andy Harrison, head of business and corporate development at Verily, and Michael Pellini, managing partner at Section 32, will take board observer positions.

The company had raised an undisclosed amount of funding in a July 2018 seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz. Ciitizen also lists property manager Hughes Management, Wavemaker Three-Sixty Health and Sethi Ventures as existing investors on its website.

Premal Shah, co-founder and chief operating officer of Ciitizen, said: “We are aggressively hiring to support release of products in partnership with select healthcare stakeholders that will immediately benefit patients – all driven by obtaining and organising a patient’s health data.

“Contrary to what is happening today, we want to facilitate patients gaining maximum direct benefit from what is rightfully theirs: their personal healthcare data.”
