Cloud storage specialist Datera reveals $40m of funding

US-based cloud storage technology producer Datera disclosed $40m in funding today from a consortium featuring Samsung Ventures, the corporate venturing division of consumer electronics manufacturer Samsung.

Samsung invested together with venture capital firm Khosla Ventures and angel investors Andy Bechtolsheim and Pradeep Sindhu.

Datera was founded in 2013 but only emerged from stealth today. The company has developed software dubbed Elastic Data Fabric, which relies on commodity hardware to create and manage a large-scale cloud.

The technology is already being used by a range of enterprises, including cloud infrastructure company Packet.

Marc Fleischmann, co-founder and CEO of Datera, said: “In the cloud era, the way the data centre is managed and operated is fundamentally different. Datera believes customers in this world need technology partners that make hyperscale operations and economics possible.

“Our team, together with visionary investors and renowned advisors, is focused on building products specifically designed for customers in this new world.”
