Codeacademy enlists Naspers for $30m series C

Media and e-commerce group Naspers has led a $30m series C round for US-based online coding education platform Codeacademy, TechCrunch reported today.

Naspers was joined in the round by venture capital firms Union Square Ventures, Flybridge Capital Partners and Index Ventures, and entrepreneur Richard Branson, all of which participated as existing investors.

Founded in 2011 and incubated by Y Combinator, Codeacademy runs an online coding skills school that provides basic services for free as well as a monthly paid subscription option that provides personalised services and additional material.

The capital will go to scaling the company’s services internationally as well as on additional platforms, particularly mobile.

Union Square led Codeacademy’s $2.5m series A round in 2011, investing alongside O’Reilly AlphaTech Ventures, the corporate venturing arm of digital media company O’Reilly Media, as well as Thrive Capital, SV Angel, Social + Capital Partnership, Founder Collective, CrunchFund, Collaborative Fund and various angel investors.

Index, Union Square, Branson, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers and Yuri Milner – also one of the series A investors – returned for a $10m series B in 2012.
