Comcast Ventures, the corporate venturing division of US-based cable and telecommunications corporation Comcast, has launched an additional portfolio company known as CTI Towers.
Comcast Ventures was formed in May when Comcast’s previous corporate venturing unit, Comcast Interactive Capital, merged with NBC Universal’s Peacock Equity Fund as part of Comcast’s acquisition of the media conglomerate.
CTI Towers will operate about 800 telecommunications towers already owned by Comcast subsidiaries throughout the US, leasing space to wireless internet operators and other businesses. Comcast appointed Anthony Peduto as chief executive officer of CTI. Peduto was formerly chief operating officer of Optasite, a US-based company that also specialised in telecommunications tower management.
Dave Zilberman, principal at Comcast Ventures, said: "Consumers are increasingly relying on their mobile devices and consuming high bandwidth applications, such as streaming video, requiring a next generation of wireless communications infrastructure."
Zilberman continued: "Newly-formed CTI Towers will work with mobile operators and other service providers to improve the quality of the wireless network experience to their customers by leveraging the extensive footprint of urban and suburban towers in CTI’s portfolio."
