Corporate activity booms

The second quarter was a bumper period in terms of investments and exits.

There were 456 investments in corporate venturing-backed companies worth $14bn, a sharp rise over the 246 investments worth $5.8bn in the first quarter. There were also 38 exits worth $9.7bn, which was a dramatic rise against the 21 exits worth $5.4bn in the first quarter.

Most of the activity was in the US, as is typical in corporate venturing, with 310 deals. China had a strong month with 36 deals. The third busiest country was India with 23 deals, followed by the UK with 21 deals, Germany with 20 deals, and Japan with 18 deals.

The most active sector was IT with 173 deals, followed by healthcare with 100 deals, services with 50 deals, and media with 45 deals.

The most common types of investment were A rounds,  with 73 deals, followed by B rounds with 69, seed rounds with 40, C rounds with 37, D rounds with 26 and E rounds with 18. There were 41 exits and initial public offerings.
